Announcements

Scholarship Winners Announced

As we typically do, Kids' Needs recently awarded two scholarships of $1,000 each to two graduating seniors.  This year's honorees were Kayla Mason and Jennifer Simpson, pictured below with Kids' Needs board member Leslie Edwards.

New this year, we also awarded a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Marcia Louden to honor her role in establishing our organization.  Pictured below with Marcia is our first recipient, Kevin Avendano.  Congratulations to all our winners and best of luck as your pursue your dreams!

Storefront Summer Hours Announced

Our storefront at 226 South Indiana Avenue in Englewood will have different opening hours over the summer months.  Instead of our normal Thursday night opening, we will be open on Wednesday mornings from 9:30am until 11:30am.  These hours will be in effect from May 31, 2017, through August 9, 2017.  Once school re-opens, we will return to our normal operating hours on Thursday evenings.  Have a safe and fun summer and thank you for your continued support.

Seventh Annual Golf Tournament Fund Raiser A Great Success

Once again, our annual fund raiser was well-supported by area golfers.  The tournament was held on April 15, 2017, at Oyster Creek Golf Club and we raised over $8,000 for the benefit of needy children in our community.  Our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to our success and to Denny Burnham and his staff at Oyster Creek.  You may view photos from the event by clicking here.

Marcia Louden Honored

Marcia, the former principal of LA Ainger Middle School, is one of our founding members, and as such she deserves recognition for our success in the community.  Marcia has retired from our Board of Directors but her contributions to our organization over the years cannot be overstated.  To recognize that achievement, and to honor her involvement from our beginning, Kids' Needs has established a perpetual scholarship fund in Marcia's name.

Each year, we award two scholarships to graduating seniors and that practice will continue.  From now on, however, there will be a third scholarship awarded in Marcia's name.  We surprised Marcia with this award at our recent picnic honoring our volunteers.  Pictured below are Marcia and Chuck Dever.  Chuck is the husband of our founder, Ann Dever, and has remained active in our charity.

Accomplishments for 2015

We have compiled a list of the accomplishments of Kids' Needs Greater Englewood during 2015.

  • We provided more than 500 students with clothing, shoes, toiletries, and overall, we supplied more than 800 pairs of shoes to area children.
  • We also awarded scholarships for 82 children to attend YMCA summer camp.
  • Continued support for School Lunch Assistance programs providing breakfast and lunches for qualifying students in five area public schools.'
  • Stocked and maintained the "closets" of necessary items in the elementary and middle schools.
  • Maintained our Kids' Needs storefront - open one evening each week providing a place where parents and students come to select clothing, shoes, school supplies, and toiletries - all at no charge.
  • Expanded the formal and semi-formal wear distribution "boutique" to help students attend Prom and Homecoming dances as well as select appropriate clothing for job and college interviews.
  • Helped dual enrollment (Lemon Bay High School and Charlotte County Vocational Technical School) students pay for required laboratory screening, uniforms, and certification exams in culinary and medical programs.
  • Paid for tutors for middle and high school students.
  • Awarded annual scholarships to two Lemon Bay graduating seniors and extended two scholarships awarded previously for another year.
  • Helped almost 300 children have a merrier Christmas - a huge increase from 2010 when we started with 55 children.

These are but a few examples of the benefit we are providing to our Englewood community.  You may download a flyer containing greater details of our accomplishments by clicking here.

Unfortunately, tough economic times persist in our area and the need for assistance continues to grow.  Please join us so we can make our accomplishments for 2016 even greater!
